Drone Strike Operation

In late November 12, 2015 (local time in Raqqa), coalition ISR tracked Mohammed Emwazi as he left a building and entered a vehicle. MQ-9 Reaper drones executed a precision strike on the vehicle near Clock Tower Square and Fayçal Street. Platform/munition details: MQ-9 Reaper with Hellfire missile. U.S. Blackhawk tracked his movements through the city before executing the operation.

"The Beatles"

Propaganda Footage
Propaganda video still

Mohammed Emwazi as he appeared in ISIS propaganda videos, 2014-2015. He was the only member of the group to appear masked on camera in execution videos.

!

The Origin of the Nickname

The "Beatles" did not choose their own nickname. They hated the term and considered it humiliating.

The hostages used it:

  • To identify them secretly during captivity
  • In conversations where guards might overhear

It was a subtle act of resistance.

Why Only Emwazi Appeared on Camera

Only one member (Emwazi) was ever used in propaganda videos. Even though the group acted together when guarding and moving hostages, the others didn't appear masked on camera in executions.

This was partly:

  • Operational: They rotated roles in hostage facilities
  • Psychological: Emwazi was used for media value because of his accent and presence

The others were not media figures inside ISIS.
